Whether you’re considering buying a hot tub, or have had one for years, you’ll need a good cover to keep it insulated and clean from debris. Why do you need one, and what should you look for?
What do Hot Tub Covers Do?
Hot tub or spa covers have two main purposes: conserving energy and protecting your hot tub. Because they are outdoor installations, even if they’re on a roofed porch, natural debris will collect in the water. Pine needles, seeds, pollen, and even bird droppings come from above or are blown in on the wind. It’s easier to brush off a cover than to scoop out gunk from the tub – and better for your water chemistry.
Insulation
Hot tub covers insulate your spa. Unfortunately, many have a very low R-value, meaning that they let most of the heat out and cold in. That makes your hot tub work harder and use more energy to keep the water warm. So, having a nice thick hot tub cover can save you money by dramatically reducing energy usage! If your spa cover gets waterlogged, its insulative properties will be reduced, so be sure to check it for steam or heat coming out of gaps, which may indicate that the foam is getting damp. Adding a floating spa blanket can further reduce the workload of your spa cover and protect it from excess moisture.
