INTERVIEW WITH JOHN AND KIM MCCRIMMON OF RNR HOT TUBS AND SPAS
- Why did you decide to start your own business?
John decided to start his own business like many entrepreneurs. With the birth of his son Jordan, John knew that he would have a better chance to create a prosperous future for his family if he was running his own business. He saw a great demand for good hot tub service and filled a much needed void in the Calgary market.
- How does your business look different now versus when you first started?
When we first started it was one man and truck working from a home office. Now we are much larger, have a fleet of vehicles and a wonderful support staff with the support of thousands of happy customers.
- How do you set your business apart from others in your industry?
We were born from service and have crafted a business around service. Unlike many hot tub companies that just sell hot tubs and outsource the service, we buy and sell spas that are serviceable, sell parts across North America and advise manufacturers on field tested solutions alongside providing our clients with excellent warranty care, service diagnostics, chemical care and a host of other customer focused care options.
- What have been some of your biggest learning experiences in running a business?
Starting a business is easy compared to keeping it running year after year. We have learned that running a business takes teamwork, perseverance and hard work. We are daily problem solvers and coaches. We have learned that our employees make all the difference, but at the end of the day our management team is responsible. It is a great joy watching our business evolve and having everything working out for us year after year. We learn, grow and evolve to meet the changing needs of our market. Working with great customers makes the business a joy. We are so fortunate to have so many great clients, and even the bad ones make for the best stories. It is fun knowing we are the best in the industry and continue to improve each year.
- What will you never compromise on with your business?
We will not compromise on integrity, truth and honesty to our clients.
- At what point did you look at your business and consider it a success?
Of course there is always another mountain to climb, but the first time we were able to fly first class to a meeting in Mexico felt like things were definitely going our way. Being able to pay all of our suppliers on time has always been a priority for our business. Knowing we have so many great partners who make our business a success is crucial to our success.
- What would you change about your business journey if you could go back?
Experience is a teacher and if I knew then what I know now I would have bought way more hot tubs during the pandemic.
- What is your favourite part of your business?
My customers and staff for sure. I love seeing our wonderful people day in and day out. Connecting with customers is a special privilege. It brings me so much joy to connect with so many different and great people.
- What is the greatest challenge that you have faced in this industry?
The pandemic was a huge challenge that forced us to learn how to adapt quickly and be more responsive to our clients. We got so much better at sourcing parts, managing inventory and responding to the needs of our customers.
- What has been your greatest success in this industry?
Our greatest success is knowing we have done our best each day. We sleep at night knowing we have done our best for our clients and have created a beautiful life for our family.
- Can you share a pivotal moment in your business?
Our business is what it is today because John invited Kim to join him in running the business. Prior to this, John had run the business on his own. Being able to share the responsibilities, hurdles and triumphs together has made the journey so much better. The collaboration of our skills has allowed the business to grow in ways neither of us thought possible.
- How do you stay motivated during tough times or setbacks?
We stay motivated with laughter. We know that times can get tough and it takes a lot of fortitude at times to march through the challenge of the day. When we can laugh at the situation everything is much easier.
- Can you share a memorable customer experience that taught you something valuable about running your business?
I will never forget a young couple that looked like they didn’t have dime to their name buy the most expensive hot tub in the store because they qualified for the highest level of financing. I would have quickly dismissed them normally but they insisted this is what they wanted. When they bought that spa I learned a valuable lesson about credit. I have had more than one high net worth looking customer not qualify at all. That day I learned never to judge a book by its cover and to embrace each customer gracefully.
- How do you adapt to changes in the market or industry trends?
We are early adaptors in many circumstances. We maintain a great network of connections that help to keep our finger on the pulse of market conditions. Keeping in touch with all of these people helps inform our decisions and adapt when needed. Then we do the work. We have learned not to get mad, just get down to it.
- Can you discuss the importance of building a strong team and company culture?
At RnR Hot Tubs and Spas our team and company culture is very important to us. We have the same philosophy for our team as our clients. Honesty and Integrity. Stand up take pride and do great work. Together we have built a great company that has stood the test of time. Each new employee brings skill, personality and opportunity.
We are dedicated to our employees and work as a management team to provide excellent benefits, stability and consistent work. We love to laugh, grow and learn from each other and are committed each day to doing the work. Perseverance, hard work and dedication has made our company strong, resilient and able to out perform our competition.
- Why do you think it is important for families or individuals to have a hot tub?
We believe that hot tubs are a wonderful addition to any home or lifestyle. They can make you feel better instantly, take away the blues and bring people together to connect. For athletes they can recover faster, for anyone suffering from lack of sleep, they are sleep machines, if you have aches and pains you can get a soothing massage right in the comfort of your home. And for any parent with teenagers, they can certainly help you have a great conversation with someone who generally doesn’t like to talk.
With medical offerings changing, stress mounting in the world and technology distractions taking over our homes, a place to get away, connect and be without gravity for awhile can make all the difference. We all need to take care of ourselves and hot tubs are one way to do that.
- What did you originally want to do before starting this business?
Originally I wanted to teach people how to live a more sustainable slow paced lifestyle. I wrote a book called Building Bridges: Sustainable Development and Corporate Community Investment and ran a Mommy Blog called Unbusy on Purpose. Both initiatives were driven to make the world a better and more satisfying place.
I learned coaching, energy healing and have studied wellness all of my life. It wasn’t until my husband needed me to help with his website that the synergy of our skill sets combined and I stepped in to bring a softer side to our business. It is so gratifying knowing that we are fulfilling our mission to help people feel better everyday.
